Broadband Update - 31/03/05

Update from BT on Work in Milton Keynes

BT Update on Loughton

Our work to improve the network serving Loughton is on schedule for an October completion pending no unexpected issue arising. Trenching, ducting and cable laying is now complete and engineers are currently verifying the circuits and changing them over to the new cable.

This step in the process will take approximately two weeks as individual customer lines are moved from the old cable on to the new inside the two new street cabinets. At the exchange end, a similar process will be underway, and both of these activities must be coordinated and done when the line is not in use to ensure no break in service to the customer.

Loughton customers who wish to order broadband should be able to place orders in the normal way from the end of October. The new cable will meet customer bandwidth needs for today and tomorrow.

Thank you for your interest and patience.

BT Update on Monkston

Our work to improve the network serving Monkston is now scheduled for completion in December or early January pending no further unexpected issues arising. Monkston is served by some twenty TPON street cabinets which contain copper lines from customer's homes and fibre optic lines connecting the street cabinet to the telephone exchange.

Before planning the solution for Monkston could begin, a number of exploratory tests were conducted. The tests revealed the need for extensive roadside trench and ducting work to ensure all twenty TPON cabinets could be served by the introduction of copper cables linking them back to the exchange. (Currently commercial ADSL broadband works over copper wires only. BT's solution for Monkston is to provide a copper path from the street cabinet back to the exchange.)

Status of the work: BT have served notice to the Council for permission to dig up the roadside along the traffic sensitive streets involved. Once permission is granted, the new ducting and cable laying can commence. We currently estimate approximately one month for the completion of the roadside work and approximately three weeks for the cable laying work. We anticipate a mid October start on the roadside trenching and duct work.

We will provide an update on progress at the end of October.

Thank you for bearing with us.

BT have released a graph which shows how the delivery of high-speed internet access is achieved using various technologies over what distances. Click on the thumb-nail to see the full graph.

Could Wireless Broadband be the way of the future (above 512kps)?
