Support AgenciesEnglish Partnerships (formerly CNT)
On 10 May 1999, a new agency regeneration and development agency for England was launched.
This new agency - English Partnerships - was created by combining the roles of the Commission for the New Towns (CNT) and the national functions of the Urban Regeneration Agency (known as English Partnerships). The regions of the Urban Regeneration Agency were transferred to the Regional Development Agencies on 1 April 1999, with the exception of London which will remain part of the new national organisation until the creation of the London RDA. The new agency will retain the statutory bases of both the Commission for the New Towns and the Urban Regeneration Agency. We therefore have all of the powers that these two organisations had in the past. By operating as a single organisation we'll use these powers in new, more creative ways. As an influential and proactive national organisation we'll generate new jobs and new investment from new ideas and new approaches. We'll do this by focussing on four key areas of work: We develop assets As one of the country's largest landowners, we aim to manage, develop and dispose of our portfolio in ways that add value and maximise wider public benefit. We create partnerships As our name suggests, we facilitate and participate in partnerships for the regeneration and development of target areas, always in support of regional priorities established by the RDAs. We improve the environment We aim to achieve the cost effective re-use of previously developed (brownfield) land. This will be done in partnership with central and local government, the RDAs and the private sector. We find new sources of funding Public resources are finite and therefore we work to attract new sources of private sector investment into regeneration. We do this by supporting central government, the RDAs and other partners in developing and implementing new and innovative funding mechanisms.
